First Year Success Series

Navigating the first year comes with questions.

What is the First Year Success Series?

The First Year Success Series (FYSS) is a collection of short, interactive sessions designed to connect students with the resources, skills, and people that can help them thrive. Through 45-to-75-minute workshops led by university staff members, first-year Buckeyes learn to to manage stress, find their community, explore majors or just figure out college life.

A Note on University Survey Courses
Many first-year students attend FYSS sessions to fulfill requirements for their University Survey course. Requirements vary by section and instructor, so check with your instructor for how many you need.

And remember - students are always welcome to attend extra sessions on their own beyond what’s required.

How FYSS Works

  • Flexible Formats: Accommodates schedules with 45–75 minute in-person, live Zoom, or asynchronous CarmenCanvas sessions

  • Transition Tags: Categorizes topics into key themes to streamline browsing and discovery

  • Tailored Participation: Allows enrollment for required survey courses or to explore topics of personal interest

  • Campus Partners: Features topics facilitated by staff across Ohio State to support student transitions
