Books Behind Bars
When’s the last time you read a naughty novel? Do you unknowingly engage in dirty discussions? Censorship involves more than an X-rated movie or an explicit song. Censorship is the suppression of "offensive" words, images, or ideas, making it easy for people to impose their values on others. This is a reality faced by those in vulnerable groups who may be limited in their opportunities of expression, including incarcerated people. “Books Behind Bars” invites you to engage in conversation about the privileges and opportunities we have at The Ohio State University to challenge our own preconceptions and attitudes. More importantly, it will bridge the connections between the experiences portrayed in Just Mercy, the lives of incarcerated people, and our diverse student voices. The event will include light refreshments and will feature a facilitated conversation with the prison education and outreach organization Healing Broken Circles, Inc., allowing students to engage with formerly incarcerated individuals.

Recess: Annual Mental Health Awareness Event
During annual Mental Health Awareness Week and on World Mental Health Day, Counseling and Consultation Services will host the Recess event, a time when students can take a break, play, and relax. This annual campus event allows for students to revisit the importance of play by experimenting with different styles of play, and the benefits of play that can reduce stress, build connections and community, and increase creativity and innovation. This event also aims to reduce stigma related to mental health and help-seeking, as well as build awareness of mental health resources. At the event, students will be invited to engage in an artistic or creative project (playing through artistic expression) to represent themes in Just Mercy that are meaningful to them. We will encourage students to consider mental health themes in particular, and ask that they discuss the themes they represent in their creative project with CCS staff facilitating the activity.

Examining the Development of Courage, Character and Skill in Social Change and Community Engagement
Community engagement work requires integrity, strong ethics and a strength of character to fully advocate for and affect change. Agents of change therefore are charged to build a sense of resilience as they navigate spaces of ambiguity, uncertainty and adversity. In the Bryan Stevenson Book, Just Mercy, readers experience this range of uncertainty as the protagonist navigates new and unfamiliar cultural environments and political relationships in an effort to change the lives of his clients. Throughout the book, the wrongly convicted inmates he represents offer countless examples of trials and lessons learned in building character and dexterity as they strive for change and hope. Participants in the workshop will reflect on the attributes and characteristics needed to build strong character and instill courage, even in the face of adversity. Participants will leave with the creation of an action plan or motto that will provide solace and motivation in times where character is tested and/or threatened.

An Evening with Bryan Stevenson, Author of Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption
Now that you have finished reading Just Mercy, come here the author, Bryan Stevenson, discuss his personal story, his motivation to write his book and advice for new college students. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions directly to Stevenson at the end of the program. Bring your hard copy of the book to the lecture, and stay afterward for the book signing to personalize your copy of Just Mercy. Just Mercy tells the story of Bryan Stevenson, a young lawyer who founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn't commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machinations and legal brinkmanship - and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Please plan to arrive by 7:15 p.m. to have the best chance a finding a seat, and enter through the College Road (West) or High Street (East) entrances of Mershon Auditorium. The State of Just Mercy in Ohio and at OSU
Stevenson’s book raised a variety of questions about life in prison, capital punishment, and life after prison. What do these issues look like in the state of Ohio? What opportunities do students have to deepen their understanding of the criminal justice system while at OSU? Talk about these questions with professors teaching college courses in local prisons that are open to OSU students and graduates of those courses, including restored citizens. Dr. Angela Bryant (Sociology) and Dr. Brenda Chaney (Sociology) have been teaching college courses for OSU students in local prisons for many years. Dr. Shuster (Philosophy) will speak to the possibility of adding more of these options for OSU students. Marshall Troxell and Brittany Lewis are current OSU students who have completed these courses. Terry Green is an OSU alum and CEO of Think Make Live, a social enterprise initiative that seeks to disrupt barriers for underserved populations by empowering communities through leadership training, programs and seminars.
