What's coming up?

And we're off — autumn semester has officially begun! In this edition of FYE News for Families, we'll highlight some opportunities and deadlines your student should keep in mind as the semester gets going.

Upcoming campus events

Students can use the Student Life calendar to stay up-to-date on what's happening around campus.

These activities can help your student connect with other new Buckeyes, discover exciting opportunities, explore campus resources, and learn more about the university and being a member of the Ohio State community.

Dining Services

Your student can visit Dining Services to learn more about maintaining a balanced diet as a student and to compare meal plan options. Meal plans are available both for students living in university housing and for students commuting from an off-campus residence.

Your student will be able to log in and change their meal plan online through September 4.

CarmenCanvas

CarmenCanvas is Ohio State’s learning management system for students, and many course instructors use Carmen as a teaching tool to connect and share information and resources with students. For both in-person and virtual courses, your student will use Carmen to submit assignments, view and download materials, and track their grades and evaluations.

Enrollment deadlines

If your student needs to adjust their schedule this semester, they should keep these academic calendar deadlines in mind. We strongly recommend that your student talk with their academic advisor before adding or dropping any classes.

Deadlines for adding a course

• August 28: Last day to add a course without instructor's written permission.
• September 4: Last day to add a course without a petition and without incurring a $100 fee (per course).

Remember: Enrolling in more than 18 credit hours will result in additional fees.

Deadlines for dropping a course

• September 18: Last day to drop a course without receiving a "W" on the record
• October 30: Last day to drop a course without petitioning

Remember: A reduction in hours may affect financial aid, benefits received under the GI Bill, auto and health insurance, residence hall contracts, tuition waivers, and visa status. Fee forfeiture dates also apply. 

Empower Financial Literacy

Talking to your Buckeye about the full cost of college — including living expenses — can go a long way in preparing your student to manage money wisely. These conversations can lay the groundwork for smart budgeting, responsible spending and lifelong financial literacy. And don't forget: Ohio State offers free financial coaching to support them every step of the way!
