Dear Ohio State first-year families:
As the campus anticipates the start of another fall semester, my colleagues and I are left wondering where the summer has gone. At the same time, every student I speak with can't wait for the semester to begin. I imagine life is not all that different around many of your homes. The days seem much too short to you and much too long to your students, whose summer jobs or activities are coming to an end and whose friends are also preparing to head off to school.
And while the campus is fairly quiet right now, that's just for the moment. We're ready for you; we're ready for your students; and we are ready to offer them new discoveries that only a college campus like Ohio State can generate.
Now, if your student is moving into the residence halls, you may be tempted to stick around after move-in day, but we encourage you to say your goodbyes on Saturday so your student can fully experience getting off to a strong start and making all of the important new connections with roommates, floormates and other fellow Buckeyes.
A great first year
At Convocation on Monday, August 22, we will remind students that it is not just about the first day, or the first weekend or the first week--it is all about a great first year. And though this first year will go quickly, we look forward to staying in touch with you, too. This is the first of many issues of FYE News for Families, our electronic newsletter just for you. Topics in the newsletter will answer common questions and speak to your concerns as family members of our first-year students.
Staying in touch
If you have additional questions not addressed by these newsletters, there are a variety of ways you can find answers:
I also invite you to visit fye.osu.edu to learn more about programs and opportunities available to your student through First Year Experience.
Enjoy the moments
When things seem most hectic in the coming days, I hope you will take a moment to pause, smile and realize what a fine young person you have guided to this stage of life. Congratulations to you and thank you for now sharing them with us.
