Report on the freshman class

The Ohio State University welcomed 7,885 new freshmen and 2,375 degree-seeking transfer students to the Columbus campus this past August.

The incoming freshmen class has an impressive profile. The class averaged 29 on the ACT, and more than 63% of them ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school classes.

Thank you for all that you do to support these exceptional students! Like you, we anticipate great things from them and look forward to providing them with plenty of opportunities along the way.

Final exams: Dec. 11-17

New students beginning their first set of final exams this week may be anxious about what to expect. Final exams are often cumulative and may comprise as much of 50 percent of a student's overall grade. Encourage your student to make a study plan and stick to it in order to best prepare for academic success.

Several university libraries offer extended hours during finals week, and residence halls and student organizations offer study breaks as sources of stress relief for students.

Preparing for winter break

Before students leave campus for winter break, remind them to do the following to protect their property:

  • Don't leave valuables on campus over break.
  • Take home jewelry, laptops, money, checks, ID cards, credit cards and similar items.
  • Keep a record of the serial number of any items of value that remain in the room, such as a desktop computer.
  • Lock the room door and windows.
  • Disconnect electrical extensions.

If something is missing when your student returns after winter break, your student should report the loss immediately to the police.
